Shaukeens…Coming of Age!

To call it a clean adult comedy is certainly not out of place as this movie is so  laced with funny situations and crude humor  , that you end up laughing into the next scene more than once..And the best part, this movie about lustful old men doesn’t go sleazy at all!

The Shaukeens begins with a mushy song with exotic spots and tenderly moments between Akshay and his ladylove and when you start feeling it to be an explanation for Akshay's alcoholic trip, bang comes the spin!

This U-turn sets the tone for the rest of the movie and you expect a madcap in store with none other than superstar Akshay Kumar (yes that’s what he's playing in the movie) tells you the story of three elderly buddies looking for some zing in life. Straight out of Basu Chatterjee's Shaukeen , Anupam Kher, the stereotype does Ashok Kumar, Annu Kapur reprises a cocky AK Hangal and Piyush Mishra, most lovable lustful of the lot plays Utpal Dutt to perfection.

Every character has been written with a peculiar trait, Annu Kapur moves around with a swagger, Anupam Kher sways his head to flaunt his single but precious band of hair, Piyush Mishra squeaks and twists his lips in a lecherously cute manner, Lisa has a fetish for dead animals , facebook and Akshay Kumar…and Akki plays himself with humor in ..an alcoholic with a penchant for method acting and national award..All this sums up to a whacky ride and some serious laughs which keeps you busy till the breezy first half.

The second half is about how each one of the three tries to woo Lisa in his own way and with Akshay Kumar's constant dig on himself and just when you feel a drag, a spin is introduced to steer it in the right direction.

The songs are placed near perfectly in the narrative and the pick of the lot is Manali Trance and of course Akki's re-entry song just before the interval.

Mauritius could have been more beautiful though!

Performance wise, it’s difficult to pick up the best and Piyush Mishra marginally makes the cut with his mannerisms which grow on you along with his character, Annu Kapur provides his share of laughs as the leader of the old brigade and Anupam Kher as usual sinks into his character. Lisa Haydon does the job assigned and does not disappoint and moreover showcases her non-acting skills albeit a twist in the end. Akshay Kumar is back after a hiatus and when you see his escapades with the Bong director, you know why he is the best when it comes to comedy.

All in all an entertaining movie which makes you drool for more and droll…Refreshing and hilarious.

***1/2 stars- Loose characters with hardly any loose ends

The editing could have been tighter. The simplistic manner in which the three oldies relegate themselves to their fate at the end is somewhat unconvincing. While you expect a drastic climax considering the way the contemporary films are made, it turns a little disappointing that the end has been treated very mildly.

On the whole, THE SHAUKEENS is a full on Bollywood entertainer that you wouldn't want to miss.

Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra and Annu Kapoor slip well into the skin of their randy characters, but it’s the script that does them disservice. Lisa Haydon is creditable as a chirpy, star-struck, daft girl. Co-producer Akshay Kumar is the real scene-stealer with his funny act as a superstar trying to change tracks to win a National Award.

Keeping in view the praiseworthy performances of these iconic men, I am going ahead with generous two stars for this disappointing blooper, which otherwise in my view deserves a half a star less if we only consider the over all appeal of the end product.

‘The Shaukeens’ is unadulterated, breezy, quirky, facelift of the 1982 cult Basu Chatterjee’s classic ‘Shaukeen’. ‘The Shaukeens’ of Akshay Kumar (who spins a major hilarious surprise here), ‘Bollywood’ and ‘comedies’ will be continuously mingled with the giggles and laughter. Go laugh your heart out.

The first half goes about with elements of comedy, some glamour and well narrated layering of the plot. The interval bang was interesting and the second half had enough share of fun moments. Overall, this is a film which is somewhat offbeat but it had those situations which really tickle your funnybone.

The Shaukeens is fun to watch only if you leave behind the logic and turn a blind eye to many bad things that's been portrayed about women!
